Every 4 years the General Conference of the United Methodist Church meets. On April 23 through May 2, the General Conference will meet in Ft. Worth, Texas. Almost 1,000 elected clergy and lay delegates will consider legislation which will establish priorities and set a direction for our church. The General Conference is the one group that can officially speak for the United Methodist Church so there could be heated debate on Social Issues, the structure of the church, the Ordained Ministry, and other issues.

One of the strengths and challenges of our church is our democratic structure. In theory all members of the church can have input into the decision making process of the church through resolutions and voice. This broad democratic process is good, but can result in confusion about who is actually speaking for the church.

So over the next few weeks as you read about General Conference do several things. First, pray for the delegates that as they deliberate they may be aware of God’s will for the church called United Methodist. Second, if you read something about the General Conference, check out who is speaking. If you want more information then go to www.umc.org for a link to General Conference news. If you have questions ask me. I will try to be informed about the decisions of the Conference.

Finally, remember that the United Methodist Church is a worldwide church which is committed to bringing the lost into a relationship with Jesus Christ. May we do our part in this great endeavor.

 Have a great day and

 SHALOM,

 Tom Mc
